There are a display monitor and a blank keyboard on the desk. The screen of the monitor shows a question for the participant:

“{think, write, read} about digital things and beings. repeat.”

The white cursor on the monitor blinks and waits for the participant’s response. He types his thoughts. He finds the blank keyboard awkward to use at first, but his muscle memory helps him quickly adapt to the keyboard. He starts typing his thoughts. But at some point, the color of the cursor abruptly changes, and sentences he didn’t mean to type start appearing on the screen.

The participant becomes perplexed and thinks it is his mistake. After trying to type again several times, he realizes that someone else’s sentences are being typed. Some of these are text from IoT devices, some are other participants’ thoughts, and some are generated by machine learning. When the cursor color changes back to white, the participant can start to type his thoughts again.

‘I am ( Things of Internet ), am I?’ is an experiment which technologically intervenes the “ordinary” process of writing in the networked digital environment – we type our thoughts with a keyboard, check the output on the computer screen, think again, and repeat. In this work, participants experience an “extraordinary” moment in their writing where, while they think they are typing their own thoughts, the screen shows someone else’s thoughts and text generated by the machine trained with recurrent neural networks (RNN). The blank keyboard adds to the participants’ confusion regarding what is their own and what is not. This work reminds us that as a kind of input and output device ourselves, we are repeatedly influenced by external information and our own perspectives, which become inseparable. In the end, we may be a collection of networked objects.
